An Exceptional Victorian Historical Collectible in Pressed Wood “Plastic”
For sale is a rare and beautifully preserved mid-Victorian portrait medallion of Princess Alexandra (later Queen Consort to Edward VII). This piece is crafted from Bois Durci, a specialized 19th-century material made of finely ground sawdust and animal blood, which was heat-pressed into molds to achieve incredible detail—a forerunner to modern plastics.
Key Features:
- Detailed High-Relief: Features a crisp, unadorned profile of Princess Alexandra facing left, showcasing an intricate upswept hairstyle and fine facial features.
- Material: Authentic dark brown/black Bois Durci with a deep, natural luster and smooth finish.
- Design Influence: The artwork is consistent with the prestigious Hanbury Memorial Prize Medal first issued in 1868.
- Dimensions: 11cm diameter.
- Condition: Excellent antique condition. The medallion retains sharp definition on the lettering and portrait with a rich, even patina. No significant chips or cracks.
A sophisticated addition to any collection of British royalty memorabilia, Victorian art, or early industrial materials.
