£115.00

An Exceptional Victorian Historical Collectible in Pressed Wood “Plastic”
For sale is a rare and finely detailed mid-Victorian portrait medallion of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). This piece is an authentic example of Bois Durci, a high-quality 19th-century material composed of ebony/hardwood sawdust and an organic binder, heat-pressed into molds to create intricate reliefs—a sophisticated precursor to modern plastics.
Key Features:
  • Intricate High-Relief: Features a crisp, bare-head profile of the Prince facing right, showcasing detailed curly hair and mutton-chop sideburns.
  • Material: Authentic dark brown/black Bois Durci with a deep, satin luster and a textured “stippled” background field.
  • Provenance: These plaques were often produced by the French manufacturer Bois Durci (A.M.) and are identical in style to royal commemorative sets from the 1860s-70s.
  • Dimensions: 11cm diameter.
  • Condition: Excellent antique condition. The medallion retains sharp definition on the lettering and portrait features. No significant chips, cracks, or warping.
A rare opportunity to own a piece of early industrial art and British Royal history.
