Original bentwood café chair with the old D.G. Fischel Sons Ltd, 19 Bishopsgate, London E.C.2 importer’s label still present underneath the seat. This is a genuine period bentwood chair rather than a modern reproduction, made in the classic Thonet-style construction with curved legs and looped backrest. Fischel was a recognised Central European bentwood furniture maker and comparable labelled examples are generally dated to the early 20th century.
It has been painted white at some stage and shows age-related wear, marks, small paint chips and surface discolouration, as shown in the photos. The original label underneath is a particularly nice feature and adds interest for collectors or anyone looking for an authentic vintage café/bistro chair.
